Autumn 1 - Hockey
Welcome to our Year 3 PE Page
This half term our PE day is on a Monday! Please remember to send your child to school in their PE kit OR comfortable sports clothes!
Hockey!
This half term, we are going to be learning all the different skills we will need to be able to play the sport of Hockey.
Take a look below to see how we have been getting on!
Week 1 - Working as a team!
For our first PE lesson, Mr Lambrou set us a bit of a challenge.
He challenged us to work on our COMMUNICATION and TEAM-WORK skills, which are both super important when playing Hockey.
He asked us to separate ourselves into 2 teams. In our teams, we then had to build a bridge using cones from one side of the playground to the other.
We had some RULES to follow though.
- No one was allowed to step off the bridge. If they did, the whole team would have to go back to the start again.
- No one was allowed to step forward until the final piece of the bridge was placed down. This piece had to be passed from the back of the bridge all the way to the front person, so we had to work as a TEAM and COMMUNICATE to make sure that each person was doing their job properly.
Take a look below to see how we got on!
Week 2 - Dribbling a hockey ball
During this weeks PE lesson, Mr Lambrou once again set us all a challenge!
He wanted us to have learnt the skills required in order to successfully DRIBBLE a ball in hockey!
We learnt that in order to successfully DRIBBLE a hockey ball, we first needed to make sure that we could hold a hockey stick properly! We learnt that we should hold a hockey stick with our thumbs facing downwards at the top and middle of the hockey stick.
Following this, we learnt that in order to successfully DRIBBLE a hockey ball, we need to maintain our BALANCE, CONTROL and DIRECTION when moving.
We then practised our DRIBBLING skills by dribbling hockey balls up and down the court that Mr Lambrou had set up for us.
Week 3 - Short Passing
During our PE lesson this week, we moved on from dribbling to learn a new skill! This week we focussed on SHORT PASSING.
We learnt that in order for us to complete a short pass successfully we need to maintain CONTROL, POWER and DIRECTION over the ball.
We focussed on maintaining our BALANCE in order to ensure that our passes were going to the correct people.
We also had to ensure that we were passing through the ball, not just swinging at the ball to make sure our passes were ACCURATE.
To do this, we partnered up and began moving around an area of the playground. We were challenged to complete 10 successful short passes with our partners.
Week 4 - Long Passing
During our PE lesson this week, we continued to learn the skill of PASSING. However, this week, instead of focussing on short passing, we moved on to LONG PASSING!
We learnt that in order for us to complete a LONG PASS successfully we need to maintain CONTROL, and DIRECTION over the ball.
However, since we were focusing on LONG PASSING, we learnt that we would need to STRIKE the ball with more POWER to allow it to travel further to our teammates.
We focussed on maintaining our BALANCE in order to ensure that our passes were going to the correct people.
We also had to ensure that we were passing through the ball, not just swinging at the ball to make sure our passes were ACCURATE.
To do this, we arranged ourselves into smaller groups of 3 and had to PASS the hockey ball between ourselves up and down the court that had been set up.
We had to ensure that we had excellent CONTROL, BALANCE and DIRECTION when PASSING the ball and had to STRIKE the ball with enough POWER that it would reach our partners.
Week 5 - GoNoodle
Unfortunately we were beaten by the Great British weather this week. With weather conditions poor outside we were forced to bring our PE lesson indoors. However, due to other events occurring around school, we were unable to use the school hall and made do with PE in our classroom.
It was a bizarre experience for us all but we rose to the challenge and made the most of our lesson time to have a bit of fun with GoNoodle.
We took part in a range of different dances and activities each designed to keep us active, using our bodies and improving our flexibility.
We had so much fun and all proved ourselves to be absolute superstar dancers!
